Supreme Court Verdict Puts Archakas to Square One


The Supreme Court verdict on Wednesday on appointment of ‘archakas’ (priests) in temples has come as a big disappointment to those who have been fighting to ensure equal rights for members of all castes for entry into the sanctum sanctorum of all temples.

The verdict had brought the entire issue back to square one, they felt. “Though the verdict upholds the State government’s right to appoint members of all castes as priests, on the other hand, the objective of this ruling is thwarted by the other part of the verdict that ‘appointment of archakas in temples following Agama rituals of individual temples concerned would continue’. As such, any priest who is serving in temples functioning as per agama sastras can move the local court against the appointment of priests stating that it goes against the agama of the temple concerned,” said activists..................Read more
