Their role in protecting fishing communities was not realised in Tamil Nadu until the 2004 tsunami. Wherever their presence was reported, not a single human life was lost. No cattle died nor was property damaged.Thousands of villagers who lived behind them in Pichavaram in Cuddalore and Muthupet in Nagapattinam were saved. But, not too far back, mangroves were thoughtlessly cut down just for firewood.
In a success story that has shown the way for other states, the mangrove cover in the state has increased from 2,100 hectares in the 1990s to 4,500 hectares in 2012, according to a report by the Forest Survey of India.............Read more
