What grows from the earth, must be given back to the earth. With this belief, a humble farmer in Tamil Nadu has been sowing seeds, tending to saplings, watching them bloom into trees, cultivating environmental consciousness in youth and offering free tree-growing guidance. G Mullaivanam, who lives in a simple hut by the roadside in Chennai’s Virugambakkam area, has created a network of 150,000 pan-India volunteers under Tree Bank India, which gives saplings to people to nurture.
