Chennai’s software land has many lakes, but water is a dear commodity there
Last month, software companies on Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR) stared temporary shutdown in the face. The South Chennai Private Tanker Lorry Owners Association had pulled off the road, protesting the seizure of five tanker lorries by the Kancheepuram revenue department. The state agency was cracking down on the practice of drawing water from wells in agriculture fields and operating without the necessary permit. At one point, when the strike seemed likely to drag on, some companies considered suspending operations till the crisis blew over. The situation underlined the IT companies’ dependence on private water suppliers. Residents of OMR also rely heavily on water supplied by operators of private tanker lorries.
