“Education the only hope for so many children”


What does education and a chance to escape poverty mean to a child in a refugee camp? For S. Ramanathan, a Sri Lankan Tamil who lives in one such facility near Tiruchi, “education is the only hope.”

He works in a grocery shop from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., attends college between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. and then goes back to work till 11 p.m.

“Some people go for part-time work. I get part-time education and work for the rest of the day,” he said. He scored 1,022 in his Class XII exam last year. His brother never made it out of Sri Lanka. He does not know where his sister is and his father is too old to go to work and support his education.
