CLRI scientists develop heat-resistant shoe sole


This might just be a shoe for hotsteppers: Scientists at Central Leather Research Institute have developed a shoe sole that can resist temperatures up to 250 degrees Celsius. The high-heat resistant shoe will be used for safety workers who enter fire and hazard zones.

The fibre reinforced plastic (FRP) sole is made from glass and carbon fibre coated with phosphorous based adhesives, which have fire resistant properties. Chemicals have been added to make add flexibility so that the material can be used for a shoe sole. The material is layered and moulded by applying pressure and heat in a technique called compression moulding.

Scientists at CSIR-Central Leather Research Institute have developed a fibre reinforced plastic (FRP) sole for shoes using made from glass and carbon fibre which can withstand heat above 250 degree C. These sole can be used on leather shoes for day-to-day wear, but will primarily be useful for safety shoes and garments...........Read more
