CHENNAI: Two days of debates and discussions on the state of Indian education system threw up many problems plaguing the system while also offering plausible solutions to them. In an apt ending, that revealed the path ahead, Union Minister of Human Resource and Development Smriti Zubin Irani in her closing address at the ThinkEdu Conclave assured students and educators that she would chart a course for the future rather than getting caught up with the mistakes of the past.

Is there politics in education? “As long as I am the minister, there will be government in education but never politics,” Irani asserted, to applause from the audience. Another praise-worthy announcement she made was that her ministry will soon digitise every certificate of every university of India, which would resolve problems faced by many students grappling with the loss of paper certificates. 

As she addressed the gathering at the Conclave on International Mother Tongue Day in a mix of Hindi and English, she lamented that in a country where more than 3,000 languages are spoken, the education department had never before officially celebrated the day.......click for more
