Call to protect street children


Government should change the policy regarding admission to orphanages so that street children also get protection and care, said K. Narayana Kurup, former acting Chief Justice of Madras High Court, while inaugurating Indian Street Birds, an organisation to protect street children and their rights, on Sunday.

Orphanages getting Government grant are unable to take in street children under their care because children need to be declared as destitute to be admitted into these orphanages, he added. There are about 3,000 orphanages in the State. A unit would be opened at each district in the State, for which activities had already started.
