Samuel N Mathew, Executive Director of National Institute of Speech and Hearing (NISH) in Thiruvananthapuram has a remarkable academic background of majoring in Special Education for his MS and PhD from Purdue University, Indiana in the US and has been incorporating his mastery in educating the differently-abled in the institution since 2010. An electrical engineer, he took up research in special education out of sheer interest in the field. Experience from exploring the assessment process to estimate the secondary injury potential of assistive technology adopted by farmers with disabilities and working as a vocational rehabilitation counsellor for the Family and Social Services Agency in the State of Indiana, the US, he developed techniques in providing higher education to people with disabilities. He is also in charge of Regional Institute for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Irinjalakuda in Kerala, where people with cerebral palsy and multiple disabilities are treated. The aim is to develop it into a national institute. Excerpts from an interview.
