Telecom operators explore tech options beyond 3G

Even as telecom operators get busy with the 3G rollout plan, they are also evaluating various wireless broadband technologies, including those using 4G.

Aircel hopes to start rolling out 3G services in the January-March quarter. Although the rates haven't been decided, it will be affordable, said Mr Gurdeep Singh, COO, Airtel.

“3G is not about network alone, it is about setting the experience for consumers. With a 5 MHz spectrum, we will have to strike a balance between the consumers and utility of the spectrum,” he said.

On the company's future roadmap, Mr Singh said Aircel is evaluating both Wi-Max and long-term evolution (LTE) technologies. The company will take a call by early November on which option to go with to deliver wireless broadband access, said Mr Singh. Vodafone too is evaluating various options and is eager to “get it right”, said Mr K. Sankara Narayanan, Chief Executive Officer, Vodafone Essar South.
