Idols from TN shrine spotted abroad’


A week after an art enthusiast lodged a complaint demanding that 12 stone idols, 30 pillars and a few ornaments belonging to an 8th century Chola-era temple in Thirumalaicheri village in Vellore district be retrieved from idol theft suspect Ranvir Shah and museums around the world, the Walajah police on Friday registered a case under four sections and forwarded a request to transfer the case to the idol wing CBCID. 

A Dilli Babu, 31, an art enthusiast from Kancheepuram, said he found that 12 stone idols of Yogi Devi and Bairavar, all belonging to the 8th century Somanadhar temple, were kept at museums abroad — GUIMET Museum of Asian Arts in France, Royal Ontario Museum in Canada, Museum Rietberg in Switzerland, British Museum in England and Detroit In stitute of Arts Museum in America....Read more
