The system of tracking instances of unauthorised construction in each of the 200 wards of the Chennai Corporation is in a shambles.
Most of the assistant engineers in the 200 wards do not maintain a register for unauthorised constructions.
As a result, most of the violations of development regulations are not recorded at the ward level.
Even as the civic body claims that the system of tracking unauthorised construction has been computerised, tracking the issuance of notice to unauthorised constructions remains a challenge.
