BAN REPUBLICS


Reserve Bank of India Governor Raghuram Rajan recently said that a quick resort to bans (of ideas or behavior that hurt a particular intellectual position or group) will “chill all debate as everyone will be anguished by ideas they dislike”. He called for an end to these acts of enforcing bans, saying that they will stifl e the country’s progress. But, if you think a ban on beef in certain states, or of Fifty Shades of Grey in Indian cinemas, or the Karnataka government banning late-night parties where foreigners are invited unless it is under police vigil are bizarre (Bengaluru mercifully has been spared), then you ain’t seen nothing yet.
