Herbal garden at Medavakkam draws many visitors


At a time when many people are complaining of fever, cold and cough, the Siddha unit of the Upgraded Primary Health Centre at Medavakkam is doing its bit to promote the usage of herbs that can promote immunity and develop resistance against various diseases. A lush herbal garden has been created within the facility. More than 30 different varieties of herbal plants are cultivated here.

Herbs such as malai vembu, nelli, ilavam, pirandai, vadhumai, karpuravalli, tulsi, maruthondri, adathoda, nagamalli and Ashoka tree are being raised.

“Herbal gardens can be cultivated at homes. It is a low-cost gardening method and has multiple health benefits. Apart from cleaning the garden every day, not much upkeep is necessary,” Siddha unit staff said. The Siddha unit has proved to be very popular with the people in Medavakkkam and surrounding areas. On an average, the unit attracts around 100 men and women who visit the outpatients ward.

Arthritis, skin problems, sugar, and asthma ailments, common cough and cold topped the list of diseases for which people approached the unit, the staff added. The staff at the Siddha unit also explain the benefits of each herb to curious visitors...............Read more
