Malavika's MIT entry shines new light on homeschooling


Mumbai girl Malavika Joshi's entry into MIT without formal education has put the spotlight on homeschooling. The 17-year-old who got homeschooled since age 12 is an exception, say academics. They say such success stories not only reflect on the student's discipline but also on the rigidity of the Indian education system which relies heavily on certification.

"Her admission to MIT is not only impressive but reaffirms my beliefs in homeschooling," says Lois Kotian, a homemaker who homeschools three of her children studying in Class 4, 5 and 6 respectively. Kotian said her family decided against sending their children to school as they did not want the children to be stressed out from a young age.
