An SSLC topper of a city school was rescued from a marriage imposed on her by her parents owing to timely intervention by the Tiruchi-based Parents' Trust and the Department of Social Welfare on Friday.
Thanks to an awareness programme carried out by Childline volunteers at the school, the girl, a resident of a locality in Woraiyur, promptly detailed her plight by dialling up the toll free no. 1098, seeking intervention and rescue from the wedding scheduled for June 7.
Surprisingly, the family of the 26-year-old prospective groom hailing from Kulithalai had reportedly feigned ignorance about the girl's age when confronted by Social Welfare Department Officer C. Lakshmi, and Managing Trustee of Parents' Trust Jayanthi Rani. What was more surprising to the rescue team was that even the 42-year-old father of the girl, Bhaskar, a construction labourer, did not know that marrying off his barely 15-year-old daughter was not legal.
