Plastic replaces green canopies as ‘thadukku’ industry falls with a thud


There was a time when shelters made of braided green coconut leaves and decorated with bright flowers used to be a welcome sight at functions in Coimbatore. Houses were thatched with dry coconut leaves which were also used extensively to build makeshift kiosks and shelters during political meetings, protests and events. Not anymore.
