Use less water for plants with material from seafood waste


At a time when restricting water use is important and maintaining plants at home difficult, a material developed from seafood waste has been found to keep plants moist with just 30% of the normal requirement.

A team of researchers at Indian Institute of Technology-Madras has used chitin, a glucose-based natural polymer extracted from shells of crustaceans, to make a material that absorbs water like a diaper.
