1,000 rare plants on display


Chennai’s tropical climate needn’t constrict the choice of flowering plants to adorn gardens, said G K Nursery’s owner Gaffer Khan on the beginning of his three-day flower show, at YMCA Grounds, Royapettah, in the city on Friday.Over 1.5 lakh plants are on display for sale, including 165 unique flower varieties and 1,000 rare plant species. Organised by the plant nursery from ECR, the show would showcase the plants species that could be suitable for Chennai’s climate.Besides ornamental and flowering plants, foliage and avenue trees, which have hybrid varieties from Thailand’s famous orchids and Hawaiin Hibiscus, are the other attractions. The phalaenopsis species of orchids, slender stems and huge flowers are available at Rs 1,500 per plant. These could be grown indoor or outdoor, said Khan. Champagne palms and cycus palms are among the exotic varieties apart from lines of rose plants.Overall, the price of plants ranges between Rs 5 and Rs 25,000. The show also houses a games centre and food court.

The show will continue till December 27 and the entry fee is Rs 50 per visitor. Students can get a 50 per cent concession.
