Arvind Kejriwal govt to raise MSP for wheat and paddy crops

with an eye on farmers, the Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Delhi on Tuesday announced its own minimum support price (MSP) for wheat and paddy crops factoring in the recommendation of the MS Swaminathan Commission.

The announcement that comes a few months ahead of the Lok Sabha polls is expected to benefit 20,000 farmer families of the national capital.

 

"The proposed MSP with 50 per cent margin at the cost of production, is Rs 2,616 per quintal and Rs 2,667 quintal for wheat and paddy respectively. The proposed MSP structure is higher than the government of India MSP by Rs 776 per quintal for wheat and Rs 897 per quintal for paddy," said Gopal Rai, state's development minister after presiding over an Agricultural Conference organised by Delhi government to deliberate on implementing the recommendations of MS Swaminathan Committee Report on Farmers' Welfare" in Delhi.

The government re-calculated the cost of production of wheat at Rs 1,744 per quintal and paddy at Rs 1,778 per quintal. The proposal, which has to cleared by the Delhi Cabinet, is likely to incur an additional liability of Rs 96.38 Crore, when implemented.

In order to save farmers, a realistic MSP mechanism as per the recommendations and the requirements of the local farming environments, was needed effectively introduced," Rai said.
