Innovative farmer: Meet the father of baby corn in Sonipat

Kanwal Singh Chauhan is BA-LLB. However, the trained lawyer is seen more on his farmland than in courts. His acumen is more into diversification of farming techniques.

The innovative farmer has the distinction for popularising baby corn farming in India from his small village Aterna in Sonipat. Realising his contribution to Indian farming, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) bestowed the NG Ranga Farmer Award on him for diversification in agriculture in 2010.

"I took on the baby corn farming in 1997 after realising that farming in wheat and paddy was no longer a profitable business. I came to know from my senior colleague in Bhadana village in Sonipat that we can get Rs 30,000 to Rs 40,000 per acre if we grow wheat or paddy but if we grow baby corn on the same farm, our income will almost triple," said Mr Chauhan.

Initially, people used to take a dig at me for trying to do something very different. However, after around 15 years since I took over baby corn farming, there are now around 400 farmers in my village doing the same and generating around Rs 4.5-5 crore per annum.

Asked about the investment in baby corn business and the level of income, Mr Chauhan said, "It requires around Rs 7,000 per acre and in return a farmer can expect a minimum of Rs 30,000 to Rs 40,000 depending on the mandi price."................Read More
